The Animals

Does anyone remember seeing The Animals play at places like Club A GoGo? A bit before my time, but it must have been a fascinating era.

Just before my time too. I started going to gigs as a callow teenager in 1967. Rumour has it the 1960's didn't arrive in Newcastle until 1972!  ;)

Lookin at sum o th buildings it's still in the 1970's n Eldon Square badly needs an over haul. The Gate's not bad but think it will date very quicky, tho am not keen on ganin in but that's more to do wi a fear o heights and the glass walls n lifts. Canna believe when a wos in there a few days ago n this bairn about 12 in the lift called it an elevator!!! This is bloody Geordieland not bloody am*erica!! Canna stand the way w o slowy being am*ricanised, a think bairns should be taught local history n culture in schools befor any one else's.  >:(

Probably straying into a whle different subject area here, but I am appalled at how little some people know about their local history. They should definitely teach more of it in schools.
I also agree that some of the recent developments in town (eg, The Gate, 55* North etc etc ) seem to have everything to do with trying to make a quick financial killing and are contributing absolutely nothing of long-term added value to our City Centre.

Spot on!  I do the best to teach my kids about our history, but it’s difficult.  In my view, the fact that local coonsils like NewcastleGateshead (wherever that is!?) seem so embarrassed by their own history that they are hell bent on importing everyone else’s from around the world doesn’t help.  I can now get a curry on the moor, see footage of a Russian rocket launch in the Baltic or watch African drummers and Peruvian nose flautists plying their trade aall ower the toon.  But if I want to hear some Northumbrian dialect poetry?  If I want to see some recent art work produced in and around Northumbria?  If I want to hear musicians playing songs and tunes from a musical culture and tradition proportionately as vibrant as any, anywhere in the world?  NEE CHANCE

Heather land and bent land
Black land and white
God, bring me to Northumberland
The land of my delight

Couldn't agree more.  But you've got more chance of getting blood oot of a stone than getting arts/culture cash in this region to support our own arts and culture.  Teach yourself the Inuit armpit acordion however....
