The Mayfair had a rep for its Friday heavy metal nights - but over the years had a variety of acts on. Best gig I saw there was The Clash in 1978 just after their second album came out. It was the third time they played Newcastle and they were on fire that night, as were the audience. Absolute total mayhem...wonderful!

I saw the Proclaimers there who were really good. I played there once and you could feel the history far more than you ever could at the City Hall.  I remember seeing REM at Tiffanys (no, honestly).  Remember when they did the Tube?  They played at Tiffs around the same time and I went to see them - unbelievable even back then.  '82 I think it was??

Many happy nights - jumping off balcony onto dance floor, Saw clash in 1980 - great venue with no seats and bar on same level - Delby nightclub round the corner was the best in late 70s / early 80s  Psychedelic Furs, Japan, Brian Ferry , Grace Jones etc - anyone have any pics?

I'm sure they took the carpet from the Mayfair and laid it in the Academy. ;D

The Mayfair! Gawd what memories that brings back!!! Every Friday night without fail we were in there giving it seven nowt! And I had the bonus of having my aunt on the kiosk so i gave her a fiver and giot a fivers worth of change. SIMPLES!!!

Saw some awesome bands of the day and some ones which had their time yet to come ... tooooooo many to mention here. BUT the most memorable were Curved Air where Sonja Kristina took her top off! Ditto Annie Lennox and Ekie Brooks with Vinegar Joe (Perv I know but who cares!). And a band called Quintesence who insisted on playing ONE song all night!!! What a bag of [censored] that was!!! Oh and Johnny Nash!!! Hate the songs but the women were in that night in droves!!!

I remember seeing the Small Faces and Procal Harum at the Mayfair in the late sixties. Expensive nights out but well worth it.  O0
