Hancock Museum closed for 3 years
« on: 00:01:11, 30/04/06 »
The Hancock Museum in Newcastle is to be converted into the Great North Museum in a £26m revamp with cash from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

What do you think about the tempory loss of this Newcastle institution?

And why on earth will it take so long?

It's a shame, but ultimatley it will make the place better, as it was slightly outdated.

To be honest I don't know why it's taking so long becuase I don't have a clue about the amount of work that will be done.
But it was dated and needed a facelift.

I remember rainy Saturday afternoons at the Hancock when I was a bairn.  But it's needed sorting for a good while.  I don't know what it is about refurbing museums, but isn't Woodhorn colliery museum near Ashington shut for ages as well?

I reckon it will take that long because the whole thing is now so trampy and needs to be stripped from the ground

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but to skid in sideways, Vodka in one hand, tab in the other - body totally worn out, screaming - WOOHOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

the last time i was at the Hancock i was a small child but i think it would be good to hve loads of local histry facts and exhibits there instead of the usual dinosaur stuff.

I think your right, although didn't the Discovery museum used to have a pretty good local interest bit?  Haven't been there for ages so I can't comment on what it's like now.  My only worry when I hear stuff like this is whether the coonsil will actually make the link between what they are doing and our own culture.  They failed so badly with the Baltic in Gateshead, you've always got to be worried

Is the Turbinia still there?  I remember when it was at the Exhibition Park museum when I was a bairn.  We used to go down and stare at it through the window.  It was covered in tarpaulins and faalin te bits.  When it was first built, it was literally the best bit of naval engineering afloat and revolutionised ocean going transport.  If I had a quid for every time Geordies had produced some world-changing innovation over the last 200 years, I'd never need to work again
