St Cuthbert's Day
« on: 20:41:49, 23/06/06 »
Anyone heard anything about the efforts to turn St Cuthbert's Day on 20th March into a day to celebrate Northumbrianness?  I'm definitely behind it as an idea, but is there much support for it???  :)

I think it would be a great idea to mark St Cuthberts day each year.
However I am not sure if there are that many people who are aware of St Cuthbert and his significance to our part of the world.

Agreed.  But I think what we need to do is keep up the enlightening work on St Cuthbert.  Can't agree on St Bede though Leon.  He was undoubtedly a great saint, and I'd happily celebrate his day.  But I think we've lost enough of our heritage to London and elsewhere (the Lindisfarne Gospels are the obvious example).  So let's keep Bede at Durham!  But let's never forget the fact that he is one of the world's first ever true academics, and that his approach to academic endeavour is essentially the same as is practiced across the whole world today!
You’re rightly proud of Jarra mind.  If ever there was a place that deserved more historical recognition, it’s got to be Jarra.

Celebrations for St Cuthbert's Day sound like a good idea.

I try and promote St Cuthberts day and a recognition of Northumbrian heritage on my blog and website and by writing the odd letter to the regional press and just hope that more people pick up on it.

Anyone heard of St Chad? I noticed there's a church named after in a brochure about heritage days out.  :)
