Old Tyne Tees Television Studio's
shelly:
Well it appears the hammer is at last to fall on the Old Tyne Tees Building on city road. Along with the Egypt Cottage another huge chunk of what was once a thriving quay side is to disappear.
I currently work in the building, which is now made up of offices / recording studios and even a church. City Road itself came into being in 1776 and we have been led to believe that there was an "ale house" of some kind on the site of the Egypt cottage, yet nostalgia seems to have no place in development.
What was once the "diva" of the tyne complete with glitz and glamour, not to mention celebrities by the shed load, is now a neglected old has been that no one seems to care about. When you are next passing, give her a nod in respect of the great things she once brought us... the tube...Catherine cookson drama's... kids TV ..ahh the memories, Tina turner relaunched her career here and who can forget it was the meeting place of Paula Yates & Michael Hutchinson. yes she gave us much in her time, but within the following few months, there will be nothing left. Sad isn't it?

Sad to see the old places go. I used hang about near there at The Riverside many years
ago, had a small business in one of the rooms upstairs for a short while and went to many gigs. Another miss was the Broken Doll, a dive but a dive with charater! ;D

I suppose we could spend hours recalling the places they have seen fit to knock down in the name of development, but what I can not for the life of me understand, is why The Byker Wall is classed as a listed building I mean no offence to any one living there, but it seems so easy to bulldoze some of the finest buildings and old achritectural sites to make way for yet more flippin office space !
I often go up to the old canteen at Tyne Tees and look out across the tyne, how different it must have looked without the multi storey car park and the casino that is now under development to be ......yes you guessed it Offices !

Went past it last week - last parts being taken down - reminded me of the Tube - still have my Punters Pass somewhere. Same sense of loss when the Mayfair shut - many nights there but best was the Clash in 1980 - still have ticket stub from the gig. Another was the Royalty Cinema in Gosforth - went there as a kid with Nana and cousins to see films - nice Art Deco signs and lights that ended up in Blyth at the Wallaw I think. Have photos of the demolition in progress shortly after a few gigs including Adam and the Ants and Madness had played.

Used to live in Gosforth and went to the Royalty from time to time.
Same with the Mayfair, Friday nights were never the same when the Mayfair closed. :(
