Mist covered Durham as German bombers flew overhead. An ARP warden described how the mist rose up from the wear as German bombers appeared overhead. Protection of Durham by climate changes were usually accredited to St Cuthbert. Instead of Durham, the bombs were dropped on Beamish, where a delayed fuse bomb exploded killing eight people, including three children.
