There's normally only big firework display in Newcastle at New Year but there is a canny one in Saltwell Park in Gateshead, 5 minute bus ride from Gateshead Metro, but normally bloody freezing!!  :)

Gatesheed t giv it it's Geordie pronounciation is a city, gone a bit down hill in the city center and not that big a shopping area, one main street. There is the Sage and the Baltic (I personally think that's sh*te). It does cover quite a big area housing wise and a 15 minute bus journey from the city center is the Metrocenter, biggest shopping center in Europe. Anyway you must know the famous bridge and the river Tyne, well Newcastle one side and Gatesheed the other!  ;D

There is a good free display at the Blue Flames sports ground (just past four lane ends metro station).
Safe and well organised.
